HB Body P965 Wash Primer is a transparent etching primer in an aerosol, free of chromates. It works as an adhesion promoter, creating a bonding layer on aluminium, stainless steel and zinc-coated surfaces where ordinary primer holds poorly.
What a wash primer is for
Aluminium, stainless steel and zinc coatings are smooth, chemically inert surfaces — ordinary paint eventually flakes off them. A wash primer contains an acid that lightly etches the metal and forms a reliable bonding layer. That is why it goes on first, before filler primer and topcoat.
Chromate-free
Classic wash primers contain chromates — hexavalent chromium compounds restricted in the EU for their toxicity. P965 achieves the same adhesion without them. Working indoors, that difference is noticeable.

How to apply
Surface preparation
The surface must be dry, clean and free of grease. Clean it with HB Body 770 NORMAL or 771 FAST ANTISIL degreaser: wipe on with one cloth, wipe off immediately with a second while still wet. Remove dust by air blowing and a tack cloth.
Spraying
Shake the can for 2–3 minutes after the agitator ball starts to rattle. Spray from 20–30 cm in thin coats. Apply 2–3 coats to a total thickness of 20–30 µm, allowing 10 minutes flash off between coats at 23 °C. Optimum working temperature is 10–25 °C.
Overcoating
Overcoat with any HB Body 1K or 2K topcoat — from 10–20 minutes after application up to 24 hours at 23 °C.
After use
Turn the can upside down and spray out a small quantity to clear the nozzle.
Important restriction
Do not apply polyester materials over a wash primer — neither polyester filler nor polyester primer. The order is the reverse: filler goes on bare metal first, then wash primer over the exposed areas, then filler primer. Breaking this rule causes the coating to delaminate.

Safety and storage
According to the safety data sheet:

Work in a well-ventilated area wearing eye protection and gloves. Store in a cool place (5–25 °C), away from open flame and heat sources. Do not pierce or burn the can, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Can filler be applied over a wash primer?
No. Polyester filler and polyester primer must not go over a wash primer — the manufacturer prohibits it outright. Filler goes on bare metal, and the wash primer comes after it.
How is it different from an ordinary primer?
An ordinary primer holds mechanically only. A wash primer etches the metal chemically and forms a bonding layer — which is why it works where ordinary primer will not stay: aluminium, zinc, stainless steel.
Do I still need a filler primer afterwards?
Yes. P965 is an adhesion promoter, not a filler: its film is only 20–30 µm and does not level imperfections. Its job is adhesion alone.
Is it suitable for wheels?
Yes — the manufacturer names restoring car rims as a primary use.
